Why Is the Heart a Symbol of Love?

The heart has represented love for centuries—but the connection is deeper than a Valentine’s symbol. Across history, people have associated the heart with life, identity, emotion, courage, devotion and compassion. Modern science has changed our understanding of where emotion is generated, yet it also shows why powerful feelings can be experienced so physically in the chest and cardiovascular system.

When You Fall in Love: From Brain to Heart and Back Again

There is no medically defined “temperature of love.” Core body temperature remains under tight hypothalamic regulation and usually stays within the individual's normal physiologic range. What may change during emotional arousal is peripheral skin blood flow, sweating, heart rate, breathing, vascular tone and the subjective sensation of warmth. In other words, a person may feel hot or flushed without having a meaningful rise in core temperature.

Romantic love is not generated by the heart alone. It emerges from coordinated activity across sensory systems, memory, emotional appraisal, reward and motivation networks, the autonomic nervous system, endocrine signaling and the cardiovascular system. The most accurate medical model is therefore not simply Brain → Heart, but Brain ⇄ Heart ⇄ Body ⇄ Brain.

Sensory Input: Someone Becomes Salient

The process begins with sensory information—what a person sees, hears, smells or feels—combined with memory and context. Sensory cortices process incoming information while memory systems, including the hippocampal formation, help compare the present encounter with prior experiences. The brain begins determining whether the person or interaction is familiar, meaningful, rewarding, threatening or emotionally important.

Emotional Appraisal: The Brain Assigns Meaning

Emotion is produced by distributed neural networks rather than one single “love center.” Regions that contribute include the amygdala, insula, anterior cingulate cortex, prefrontal cortex, hippocampal-memory systems and subcortical reward circuits. Together they integrate sensory information, memory, social context, expectation and internal bodily state.

Reward and Motivation: Dopamine Increases Salience

Early romantic attraction strongly engages reward and motivation circuitry. Dopaminergic neurons in the ventral tegmental area (VTA) project to regions including the nucleus accumbens and other parts of the striatum. Dopamine does not equal love by itself; rather, it helps encode reward, motivation, attention and reinforcement. This can make one person unusually salient—someone the brain is motivated to seek, notice and remember.

Autonomic Signaling: The Brain Sends Instructions to the Body

The hypothalamus and brainstem autonomic centers help translate emotional appraisal into bodily physiology. Sympathetic activation can increase arousal through neural and adrenal catecholamine signaling, including norepinephrine and epinephrine. Parasympathetic pathways, including vagal influences, contribute to cardiac regulation, recovery and shifts toward calmer states. The balance between these systems changes from moment to moment.

The Heart Responds

Sympathetic stimulation and circulating catecholamines can act on beta-1 adrenergic receptors in the heart. The sinoatrial (SA) node—the heart's primary pacemaker—may fire more rapidly, increasing heart rate. Myocardial contractility can also increase, making each beat feel stronger. Depending on the person and situation, this may be experienced as a racing, pounding or unusually noticeable heartbeat.

The Rest of the Body Joins the Emotion

Autonomic activity can alter breathing, sweating and blood-vessel tone. Changes in cutaneous circulation can create facial flushing or sensations of warmth, while sweating may increase in areas such as the palms. Gastrointestinal autonomic responses may contribute to the familiar sensation of “butterflies.” These reactions are variable and are not unique to romantic love; excitement, anxiety and anticipation can produce overlapping physiology.

What Happens to Body Temperature?

There is no universal core-temperature value that identifies romantic love. A commonly cited normal adult core-temperature range is approximately 36.1–37.2 °C (97–99 °F), although normal temperature varies with measurement site, time of day, age, activity and individual physiology. Emotional arousal can alter peripheral blood flow and therefore local skin temperature, but a warm face or flushed skin should not be interpreted as a specific diagnostic temperature of love.

Interoception: The Heart and Body Signal Back to the Brain

Communication is bidirectional. Baroreceptors and other visceral sensory pathways continuously transmit information about cardiovascular and internal bodily conditions toward the central nervous system. The brain integrates those signals through interoceptive networks, including the insular cortex and related regions. This helps explain why an emotion is not merely an abstract thought: the brain can perceive the pounding heart, altered breathing, warmth or tension occurring in the body and incorporate those sensations into the conscious emotional experience.

How an Emotion Builds Into Attachment

Repeated interactions can strengthen learned associations between a particular person and reward, safety, comfort or anticipation. Dopamine-related reinforcement helps make experiences motivationally important, while oxytocin and vasopressin systems are implicated in social bonding and attachment. Memory consolidates meaningful encounters, and repeated experiences can gradually transform initial attraction into a more stable emotional bond. No single neurotransmitter should be described as the “love chemical”; romantic attachment reflects interacting neural, hormonal, psychological and social processes.

The Ancient Connection: The Heart as the Center of the Person

In ancient Egypt, the heart held extraordinary meaning. Egyptians regarded it as a center of emotion, memory, thought, personality and moral identity. Unlike many other organs, the heart was generally left in the body during mummification because it was considered essential to the person and to the afterlife.

The best-known expression of this belief is the Weighing of the Heart. In funerary tradition, the deceased person's heart was weighed against the feather of Ma'at—associated with truth, justice and right order. A balanced heart symbolized a life in harmony with that moral order. In this worldview, the heart was not merely an organ. It represented the record of a person's life and character.

The Heart, Soul and Human Spirit

The connection between the heart and the soul is especially important in ancient Egyptian thought, but it requires careful wording. Ancient Egyptians did not describe the human being with one single concept equivalent to the modern English word “soul.” Funerary traditions described several dimensions of personhood, including the ka, ba and akh. The British Museum summarizes these as aspects such as essence, personality and a transformed or effective spiritual existence.

Alongside these spiritual dimensions stood the ib, or heart. The heart had exceptional importance because it was associated with intelligence, feelings, actions, memory and moral character. The Metropolitan Museum of Art notes that the heart could speak for the deceased during the judgment ceremony, accounting for a lifetime of deeds.

Some museum scholarship goes even further in describing the ancient Egyptian heart as the seat of the spirit. This helps explain why the heart was generally preserved with the body and why heart scarabs and heart amulets were placed with the deceased. The heart was not simply a pump in this worldview: it was bound to identity, conscience, judgment and the possibility of continued existence.

The Weighing of the Heart: Conscience, Character and the Afterlife

In the Weighing of the Heart, the heart was measured against Ma'at—the principle of truth, justice and proper cosmic order. If the deceased had lived justly, the person could continue into the afterlife. The symbolism is profound: the heart effectively represented the moral record of a human life.

Is the Heart Literally the Soul?

Historically and spiritually, many cultures have connected the heart with the soul, spirit or deepest self. Scientifically, however, there is no established anatomical location of a soul or spirit. Modern medicine can study the heart, brain, nervous system, hormones and bodily responses to emotion; questions about the soul belong to philosophy, religion, spirituality and personal belief.

Keeping those domains distinct makes the symbolism stronger rather than weaker. The ancient heart can be understood as a symbol of identity and spiritual being, while the modern heart can be understood physiologically as part of a dynamic brain-body system.

From the Inner Self to Romantic Love

The association did not stop with Egypt. In the classical world, thinkers continued to place major emotional and mental importance on the heart. Aristotle, for example, treated the heart as central to sensation and thought—an idea modern biology does not support, but one that strongly influenced later cultural traditions.

By medieval Europe, the heart increasingly became a visual and literary metaphor for devotion. One of the earliest often-cited images appears in the 13th-century French Roman de la poire, where a lover's heart is symbolically offered to a lady. Over the following centuries, the familiar heart shape became more strongly associated with romance, affection, charity and spiritual devotion.

This is how phrases such as “give you my heart,” “from the bottom of my heart,” and “heartbroken” became so powerful: the heart had already become shorthand for the deepest and most personal part of the self.

What Modern Science Says

Modern neuroscience places the brain at the center of emotional processing. Love is not literally produced by the heart. But that does not make the ancient symbolism meaningless.

Emotion engages interconnected brain, autonomic nervous system and endocrine pathways that can alter heart rate, blood pressure, vascular tone, breathing and other bodily functions. At the same time, sensory information from the cardiovascular system travels back toward the central nervous system. Contemporary research therefore describes heart–brain communication as bidirectional.

Why We Can Physically Feel Emotion

A racing heart during excitement, a pounding heartbeat during fear, or the heavy sensation people describe during grief are examples of emotional states producing genuine physiological responses. The brain also interprets signals from within the body—a process called interoception—so internal cardiovascular sensations can become part of the conscious experience of emotion.

“Broken Heart” Can Even Have a Medical Meaning

Takotsubo cardiomyopathy, commonly called broken-heart syndrome or stress-induced cardiomyopathy, is a striking example of the connection between intense stress and cardiac function. Severe emotional or physical stress can trigger temporary weakening or altered pumping of the heart muscle. It can resemble a heart attack and requires medical evaluation.

Important: This does not mean ordinary sadness literally breaks the heart. It demonstrates that emotional and physical stress can have measurable cardiovascular effects.

The scientific explanation is different from the ancient one, but it helps explain why the symbolism remains intuitive. We do not literally think or love with the heart; nevertheless, love, fear, grief and joy can all be accompanied by real cardiovascular sensations.

The Meaning Behind PURHEART

For PURHEART, the heart can represent more than anatomy. It can represent the whole person at the center of care—the individual whose physical comfort, emotional experience, dignity, identity and human spirit matter. This meaning does not require a religious interpretation. Rather, it recognizes a long human tradition in which the heart symbolizes the deepest dimensions of personhood.

Used as a brand philosophy, this is best understood as a historical and human-centered statement rather than a claim that the heart is the biological center of thought or emotion. It connects an ancient understanding of the heart as the essence of the person with a contemporary commitment to compassionate, whole-person support.

A Symbol That Bridges Thousands of Years

Ancient civilizations saw the heart as a keeper of identity, character and spiritual significance. Later cultures made it an emblem of devotion, compassion and love. Modern science reveals sophisticated communication among the brain, nervous system and cardiovascular system. These are different kinds of explanations—historical, spiritual, cultural and scientific—but together they help explain why the heart remains one of humanity's most enduring symbols of life and care.
